The moonlight reflected off of the mirrors that surrounded the room. She’d been in the room a few times with her fiancé Brian. But she had never seen it look like this. The air left her body looking at the sky. Genievea Mulrouney had redone the entire solarium just for her. She felt so special. Tonight was all about the future, her future with Brian. She felt tears brim her eyes but quickly fought them back. Rowan felt like she gliding to the vanity that was in the middle of the room. Her fingers touched the antique combs, brushes, and fragrances. Circling the room she looked around and saw the silk covered couches. The solarium was her favorite room in the house and they transformed it into her room for the night. She squealed with excitement as she ran into the adjacent room. It was a bathroom that looked bigger than her apartment in New York. She still couldn’t believe she had secretly fallen in love with her best friend brother. Cordelia and she had been out of touch too long. Placing her I-Pod Touch onto the I-Pod deck the music started to fill the room.
Rowan turned the French Victorian bathtub on and let the water fill the tub. She swiftly undressed knowing the guest would be arriving soon. Stepping in the warm water the bubbles eclipsed her body. Biting down on her bottom lips she smiled. How did she get so lucky? She had a wonderful career as a fashion designer and a fabulous man too? Rowan felt like a superstar as she washed her body. Getting out of the bath wrapped her towel around her body. She dropped the towel and slipped on the silk kimono hanging on the hook. Rowan packed up her things in her bag and planted herself in the vanity.
After few minutes of applying make-up and pinning her hair up she felt ready to start getting dressed. Slipping on her diamond earrings her father had bought her. Rowan looked up in the mirror and saw Genievea a slight scream escaped her lips.
“You frightened me.” Rowan said standing up to greet her future mother-in-law.
Genievea walked frigidly toward the tart that seemed too capture her beloved Brian heart. She hugged the young woman with a tightness that would make her feel welcomed.
“You would have made a beautiful bride Rowan.” Genievea let go of the girl making eye contact with her. The goal was to make her as uncomfortable as possible.
“You mean I am going to make a beautiful bride Ms. Mulroney.” Rowan said stepping backwards feeling completely uncomfortable. She sat down in the vanity looking at her reflection.
“No you heard correctly my dear. I’m telling you that you won’t marry my son or else I’ll destroy something very precious too you.” Genievea knew exactly what she was doing. There was no way in hell was Rowan Stallworth marrying into her family. Not when the Stallworth’s weren’t a real family. You see some secrets were buried in the past. Genievea knew them all and refused to let Rowan marry her son. Call it jealousy.
“Why are you saying this to me? What have I done to hurt you or your son? I love Brian.” Rowan said as her voice started to tremble. She couldn’t believe this woman.
“I pity you. Look at you ready to crumble.” Genievea shook her head. “Just let me tell you something. Nothing with your life is what it seems. That’s not me being evil it’s the truth. If you continue with the marriage charade I’ll destroy your parent’s relationship. I’ll tear apart their lives.” Leaning over and whispering in Rowan ear. She wrapped her hands around Rowan’s shoulders. “I know your father in a very very very personal way.” With that Genievea stood up adjusting her Dior trench coat she left the room.
Rowan sat at the vanity as tears of confusion and shock ran down her face. What did she mean she knew her father? Had her dad been having an affair? Why would she want to break-up Brian and her? Nothing would stop her from marrying Brian. Rowan grabbed her mascara and started to reapply. Tonight was about her future. Whatever her parents had in the past was their business. At the same time Rowan felt something in the pit of her stomach. This was the beginning of something horrible to come.
Jennifer walked into the foyer taking a deep gulp of her champagne. Tonight was more than a notion. She wasn’t ready for this day. She wasn’t ready to give up her daughter to this Brian. Not that he wasn’t a pleasant young man it was just she wasn’t ready. Rowan was just wearing pigtails. Now she understood how her parents felt about her marrying Anthony. She exhaled out the stress that was building in her body. Wrapping her left arm around herself her cellphone rang through purse. She answered the phone bubbly due to the champagne starting to take effect.
“Hello.” Jennifer said not noticing the private number on her phone.
“You think your life is perfect don’t you?” The robotic toned voice said.
“Pardon me?” She said instantly sobering up.
“I’ve made a choice to help you not be so blind. Your husband is not what he seems?” The voice although robotic had venom in the words it was saying.
“What did you just say?” Jennifer felt her heart beating faster. “Listen I don’t have time for games. So whoever this is good-bye.”
“Have you met any of his family?” The voice asked.
Those simple words froze Jennifer from hanging up. She had never met a single person in her husband family. He told her he was orphaned but had scattered family. She wondered exactly why he never expressed discontent about not being around his family. At the same time Anthony had alluded to it being bad blood in his family. As his wife she never wanted to push any buttons about his past. Her father had questioned the same thing on the eve of their wedding. Investigate this man before marrying him. For some reason she felt those words were coming back to haunt her.
“My husband’s family and he don’t get along. You know nothing about my family. This conversation is done.” Jennifer didn’t know why but she didn’t hang up.
“He’s going to kill you. If not physically but mentally. You’ll be left with nothing don’t stop looking. Look behind those meddles and see the true man. See the monster.”
The line went dead in Jennifer ear. She closed her eyes and opened them to see her husband Anthony approaching her. Instinctively Jennifer opened her arms and he embraced her.
Her body was tense in his arms. For the first time in twenty years she questioned him. His bellowing voice interrupted her thoughts.
“I love you.” Anthony said in her ear.
She truly wondered if those words were true.
Camryn arched her back as the ice slide down her back. She hissed in pleasure as he started to kiss her back. He kissed the tattoo on her lower back. As he crunched on the letting the small pieces spread on her back. Brian's breath became heavy as her body snaked in a seductive way. Never to be outdone she flipped over as her lips marked their passion on his neck. Sexy laughs and inaudible phrases leaved their lips as they kiss. They had already gone three rounds in the bed. This was a game they played after sex to see who could get the other hot again.
Brian smirked as he looked at the beauty before him. She was stunning and every inch of her skin was delectable. He exhaled as she rolled off of him. They were perfect for each other in the sheets. The grandfather clock ominously started to ring. It was eight o’clock his engagement party was slated to start soon. He leaned up and on cue Camryn grabbed his arm.
“You’re leaving after that?” She asked looking disappointed.
“Did you think I could stay? Camryn you need to stop pretending that this is going somewhere. I’m getting married in three weeks.” Brian said gruffly standing up looking at his plaything.
“Do you really want to be stuck in a relationship with her? I’m what you want.” She pouted feeling a rush of jealousy hit her body. Could he actually want that bitch more than me? Camryn eyes filled with a faded sadness. She looked like everything was hitting her. But she was plotting. Nothing was forever and she’d prove that. He couldn’t resist her body and he’d come back.
“I have to get ready we can talk about this later okay.” Brian leaned down and kissed her lips. He wanted to take her body all over looking into those brown eyes.
“Yeah of course we could talk about this later handle your business. I’ll call the cleaners and I’ll be in the other shower.” She watched Brian walk into the shower her eyes were full of tears. Camryn grabbed her dress off the floor then her heels. She waited until she heard Brian shower running and she walked into Rowan design studio. She placed her red dress on the mannequin and took the one that was on the mannequin. Camryn sat her shoes down by the bathroom leaving the dress in the chair. She slipped into the shower scrubbing Brian back.
“Thanks you didn’t leave any marks did you?” He asked turning around to face her.
“No I didn’t.” They kissed as their soapy hands explored the other’s body. He picked Camryn up by the thighs and inserted himself in her warmth. Camryn moaned in pleasure as she started to kiss him. Camryn ran her nails in his back as he pushed inside of her ferociously. It seemed the water got hotter because felt a rush of heat. They were going longer. Brian knew he had to go but he couldn’t help it. He wanted more of her. Camryn started to shake his arms as she pulled his hair. He started to moan as trimmers of ecstasy was started to erupt in both of their bodies. Brian looked into the other woman eyes. Camryn stared back and knew he wasn’t his.
She looked away. He turned her face back and looked into her eyes. Brian leaned in and kissed Camryn. This was the passion he should be giving Rowan. But as of late Brian was too stressed around her and this wedding.
Camryn grabbed him a towel after wrapping her body up. He wrapped up around the waist and grabbed his razor. Camryn grabbed his hands and took it from him. She gently applied the shaving cream. She touched the hair across his chin. Leaning down she kissed his lips getting the shaving cream on her lips. Sliding the blade down his neck he jumped a little. Brian felt this was a little to intimate. They were lovers a long time ago but he was feeling too comfortable. He grabbed her hands before she stroked his face with the blade again. “I can finish.”
Camryn bit down her bottom lip and blinked her eyes. Tears formed a little she felt a connection and he just closed down. “See you.” She said under her breath rush out of the bathroom. She slipped on the dress and the heels. Camryn turned around touching the walls. This will always be mine. I’m going to be Ms. Mulroney. To hell with Rowan, she doesn’t deserve this. I should have had this life. Now I’m going to take it. Closing the door she opened her purse and scratched out Rowan name. Throwing the notepad in her purse as she turned back looking at the penthouse. Camryn Spencer had a devious smile on her face as the elevators door closed.
With a sheet wrapped around her body she looked at Aztec Springs. It was growing into a small Las Vegas. No a small metropolis would be a better fitted to the blooming community. Aztec Springs was once a retirement city now is becoming a trendy utopia for the elite of Nevada.
“I do believe I should get going. My brother’s engagement party is tonight.” She dropped the sheer sheet letting it drape to a pool onto the floor. Natalie Prescott slowly walks over to the man that sends chills down her spine. He was trouble and she knew it. She shouldn’t even be seen in this hotel. Her father would be disgusted. The truth was she didn’t care. She was addicted to Dias Marcosi and needed a fix.
“Don’t look like that you know I have a life.” She leaned in kissing his lips.
Wondering how her life got so torn apart. The funny thing was she was a lawyer. Natalie was naturally balanced her options. She had spent years building her relationship with Cole. Did she truly want to waste it? On the other hand fire like Dias and she should never be caged up. She felt like sometimes she was going to explode if didn’t get to feel his touch. With those thoughts in her head she walked away to the shower and knew her heart was torn into two.
Dias looked at her as she walked away. He’d never know it six months ago. That he’d start to care. Walking to his bar he poured a double shot of brandy. Sitting down on the balcony he took in the Nevada dry air. It felt tense or maybe that was him. Looking at the stars he felt himself growing discontent with is position in Natalie life. The truth was there all along. How could he miss it? The funniest part was Dias was a tactical man. He should have known fate would play a cruel joke on him. A part of him felt the woman that he was with was his soul mate. This was to get closer to Maxwell Mulroney. Natalie was a weapon, but now he wasn’t sure what she was. All he knew was she was his forbidden fruit. He couldn’t love her because that would destroy his entire plan.
The hot water washed away her sins or so Natalie thought. She closed her eyes and was at her cabin with Cole. The pitter patter of their children running up to them echoed through the house. Natalie saw the cutest little girl with strawberry blond hair. Then there was a little boy covered in dirt looked identical to Cole. They laughed and hug the children and the water goes cold. Natalie opened her eyes with wet tears drops falling down her face. She had done it again. Dreaming about the impossible the facts remain the same she’d never have children. She wondered if that was the reason she was with Dias. She couldn’t satisfy her husband so she wanted to make someone feel satisfaction. Natalie slipped on her black dress and heels. Quickly pinning up her hair she walked out to the balcony with Dias.
“Am I interrupting you?” Natalie asks as she walks into his broad arms. Natalie took in the scent of a man who actually wants her. Cole could say what he wanted. She knew the truth was that he didn’t want her because she couldn’t have children.
“Actually just the opposite I was just thinking about you.” Dias said looking her in the eyes.
“And?” She snappily responds matching the intensity of his glare.
“I want more of you. You aren’t ready to give up on your marriage or so you say. But don’t you think that you’ve given up on your marriage already by sleeping with me?” He knew the truth would sting a little but he had to say them.
Natalie face lost the color. Was her marriage already over and she was preventing the inevitable? Her cellphone rang and just on cue it was Cole. “Hey honey I’m leaving the office now.” She said into the phone grabbing her jacket and briefcase. “I’m on my way don’t you dare leave that house Cole Prescott!” She laughed into the phone turning around looking at Dias. Their eyes met. “I love you too.” Still looking at Dias she closed her phone and walked out of room.
Tears streamed her face she was caught in the middle of two men she could see herself spending the rest of her life with. She’d have to make a choice for them and her own sanity.
Mackenzie slipped off her high heels. “I know I got at least five hundred Nautica. You know anytime you need a ride please call me.”
She unlocked the kitchen door she saw lights on. Her dad must have forgotten the camera. Today was the princess big day. Everyone had to remember when she became Aztec Springs true royalty. Mackenzie bitterness was clear as she plopped her gym bag down on the couch. She heard her dad walking down the stairs and she smiled.
“Dad you should say something you could have given me a heart attack.” Her eyes filled with tears as she looked at her older brother. No it wasn’t her dad. It was Noah!
“Noah!” She screamed running into his arms.
“Slow down kiddo.” He said smiling at his little sister. “I need you to keep this a secret mom and dad doesn’t know I’ve been discharged.” Noah grabbed his little sister looking at her. Damn time had flown because she was just a skinny something. Now she was a young lady. His emotions were racing high. He didn’t know what his family would see in him now. Truthfully Noah didn’t know how he saw himself.
“Have you talked to Drea? She’s like family now Noah.” Mackenzie said looking at her brother. “And your secret is safe with me. I have to go get ready but go see Drea. She’s missed you.” With that Mackenzie kissed her brother cheek and grabbed her bag running upstairs to prepare for the princess party.
Noah smiled at Mackenzie she was really getting herself back together. He was proud. But she was right about one thing. Drea had waited far too long and so had he. Noah looked down at his black jean, white V-neck, leather jacket, and black boots. He felt good not to be wearing a uniform. He grabbed a flower out of the vase of the flower pot and smiled. Andrea Johnston her I come.
Drea Johnston had her I-Pod headphones on listening to the track that her friend sent to her. She hummed lyrics over the beat wondering if this could be it. The song she had been waiting on. Her big voice came bursting through the apartment. She took her I-Pod off when she heard the buzzer go off. Only person she expected was Mackenzie and that wasn’t for another thirty minutes. They were riding to Rowan’s engagement party.
Walking to the buzzer she pressed the button. “Who is it?”
“Guess?” The voice said back.
A chill ran up her spine. It couldn’t be. He wasn’t due back for another two weeks. “Noah!” Drea called out through the buzzer.
“Let me up baby.” Noah said as he stepped back so she could see him.
Drea looked outside of the window and sure enough there was her man. Tears splashed down her face as she raced down the stairs to meet with Noah.
“Thank-you God for bringing Noah back to us safely.”
They met right in the middle she jumped into his arms as they kissed for what seemed like the first time. Every touch seemed new.
“This isn’t real!” She cried holding Noah.
“It’s real baby.' He replies, with a kiss, 'I fought to get home. I fought for this moment baby.”
His tongue slowly inserts in her mouth. The kiss stops the words this time there bodies are talking. His hand rubbing against her soft skin.
“I love you.” She said as she kissed the tear that was escaping his eye.
“I love you too.” Noah held her close to his body and for once his body wasn’t craving drugs. He’d just been shot with something stronger than any drug, love.
Jennifer sat on the stairs waiting for Rowan to come down. She was going to go upstairs but that phone call had disturbed her. She knew the caller had a point she knew nothing about her husband past. Maybe looking into his past wouldn’t be a bad idea. Jennifer shook the thought out of her head.
“You know you used to look like that when you got us in trouble.” Cole flashed his dazzling smile at his onetime love Jennifer Stallworth.
Jennifer had been back in town for years and hadn’t had the decency to really reconnect with old friends. She was always busy with her children or work. What time did she have to remember the past? Getting up she walked to Cole and opened his arms. She heard idle gossip about him marrying twice. She refused to listen to it because simply it wasn’t her business. Jennifer folded her arms and smiled. “You haven’t aged at all.”
“Look who’s talking you still look like that spirited eighteen year old who dreamed of being a doctor. Pardon me made her dream come true and became a doctor.” Cole said giving her the same bright smile she gave him. He didn’t know why but he felt alive again around her. Natalie made him smile occasionally but from moment he spoke to her he couldn’t stop smiling.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Jennifer smile had faded but the look he was giving her. It was amazing. It was almost after all these years he still cared.
“Nothing just thinking about high school. Still shocked you have three kids let alone two that are adults.” Cole was telling the truth. Apart of him always thought they’d end up together.
“Well things change.” She said looking at him. “I had to move on you know that don’t you?” Jennifer asked looking at him.
“I couldn’t expect anything else. I guess I can’t wipe this stupid smile off my face because we actually talking again.”
“I never wanted to stop.” It was the truth. If they couldn’t have worked out lovers Jennifer would have taken friendship.
“Then let’s promise never to stop talking again. I missed you Jennifer.”
“And I’ve missed you Cole.”
